The deciduous forest biome is located between the polar regions and the tropics. This includes eastern United States, Canada, Europe, China, and Japan. Because of its location, air masses from both the cold polar region and the warm tropical region cause the changes of climate in this biome. Mid-latitude deciduous forests have warm and cold seasons. They have from 760 to 1500 millimeters of percipitation and it is evenly distributed throughout the year. A lot of the population lives in this biome. Even though evergreens are in this biome, it is characterized as an "abundance of deciduous trees."

When the leaves fall onto the forest floor, they decompose and the nutrients in the leaves are absorbed by the soil. Since there are so many nutrients in the forest floor, the soil is very fertile.
