There is quite a large range of mammals, birds, insects, and reptiles in the temperate deciduous forest biome. Mammals that are found in this biome are bears, raccoons, squirrels, skunks, wood mice, and in the U.S., deer, too. There are also white bobcats, mountain lions, timberwolves, and coyotes, but they have almost been completely eliminated by humans because they are dangerous to humans. There used to be elk and bison, but they have been hunted to (almost) extinction.
ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS
There are two types of adaptations used by animals in this biome. They are migration and hibernation. When a variety of birds migrate, most of the mammals hibernate through the cold winter months.
There is also a behavioral adaptation that some animals like mice and squirrels do. They have adopted food storage. The nuts and seeds that they find in the summer are stored in the hollow of trees for food in winter. The cold weather helps keep the seeds and nuts good through those winter months.
